New Site Layout
My apologies if anyone was having trouble visiting the site over the past few days. I updated to a more recent WordPress version, and it broke the site.
After poking at the problem a while, I decided to try upgrading the site’s “theme” file, which specifies the stylistic details of the site’s appearance: fonts, column layout, colors, backgrounds, and so on. The problem apparently disappeared when I replaced the theme. (I say “apparently” because the problem seems to appear, or disappear, depending on cookies and other saved state – until I’ve tried this in a few different places I’m not convinced everything is working).
The previous site theme was called “Twister” and provided by “Nate from Refueled Dot Net.” It was borderline obsolete when I picked it up, but I liked it enough to risk the incompatibilities. It served pretty well for about a year, though it had a few rough edges.
The new theme, “Panorama” from “Themocracy,” has a lot more bells and whistles. In many themes, imagery is built in: if you want to replace the background or header image, you replace an image file in the theme with one you provide. Panorama, on the other hand, lets you upload a bunch of alternative images and choose them in the theme configuration.
The site might be rocky over the next week or so, since I may try activating RPX again. If RPX manages to work, that will allow people to log in and register using their Facebook identifier and password, instead of inventing a new name and password.
The theme I use on my other blog is starting to show its age – I wonder if it’s time to replace that one, too.
I like this Panorama theme, but I don’t want the same theme in both blogs.
